What is the Pimcore–InDesign integration and what problem does it solve?
It is a two-part solution consisting of a Pimcore Bundle and an InDesign Plugin. It allows designers to pull product data and assets directly from Pimcore into Adobe InDesign, reducing manual copy-paste work, preventing errors, and speeding up the production of catalogs, packaging, brochures, price lists, technical product sheets, and other print and digital materials.
Who is this solution intended for?
For companies using Pimcore to manage product data and digital assets and creating catalogs, packaging, brochures, price lists, technical product sheets, and other print and digital materials in Adobe InDesign.
How does the integration differ from other InDesign automation tools?
It connects directly to Pimcore and works with any Pimcore data model while allowing designers to retain full control over the InDesign document. Placeholders tell the plugin which product data to insert and where, but they do not restrict the layout, styling, positioning, or formatting. When users click Check for updates, the plugin compares the latest Pimcore data with the content in the InDesign document, shows exactly what changed, and lets them apply updates individually or all at once.
Is this a two-way sync between Pimcore and InDesign?
No. It is a one-way sync: Pimcore ➝ InDesign. Designers can still fully edit layouts manually without breaking the link to data.
Does it work with any Pimcore data model or only specific ones?
It works with any Pimcore data model. Admins choose which objects and attributes are exposed to InDesign.
Is an internet connection required for the plugin to work?
Yes, an active connection is required to communicate with the Pimcore instance and fetch data, updates, and assets.
What are the system requirements for the Pimcore Bundle and the InDesign Plugin?

Can I select which Pimcore objects and attributes are exposed to InDesign?
Yes. The bundle relies on Pimcore DataHub, where admins can create a GraphQL configuration, or use an existing one, and choose which objects and attributes are exposed to InDesign. Related objects and assets are available in the plugin only when the relevant relation fields and linked data are exposed through GraphQL. DAM assets cannot be exposed by individual folder: the configuration exposes either all assets or none.
Does the bundle include user permissions or role management?
No. The plugin does not use Pimcore user roles or permissions. Access is controlled entirely through the GraphQL configuration and its API key, which determine which classes, objects, fields, and assets are available in the plugin. Different GraphQL configurations can be used to provide different levels of access. All plugin users connecting with the same API key have access to the same data.
How is data versioning and security handled?
Access to Pimcore data is controlled through the GraphQL configuration and API key rather than Pimcore user roles or permissions. Communication between Pimcore and the plugin is protected using SSL. The API key is stored locally in Adobe InDesign’s encrypted secure storage and is not saved in the INDD file, so it cannot be extracted from the document. The plugin retrieves the latest published version of each Pimcore object. If a previous version is restored and published in Pimcore, GraphQL and the plugin will reflect that version.

How do I connect the InDesign Plugin to my Pimcore instance?
Enter your product key, GraphQL endpoint URL, and API key in the plugin’s connection settings. These credentials are stored locally in Adobe InDesign’s encrypted secure storage and are not saved in the INDD document. This means the connection does not transfer with the document when it is opened on another computer. The API key is masked in the plugin and cannot be viewed directly.
What tabs or features are available inside the plugin?
- Products: Browse exposed Pimcore objects, including objects from relations. By default, objects are organized into tabs by class, but users can switch to a tree view that preserves Pimcore’s object hierarchy and inheritance structure.
- Updates: Review changes to product content and choose which information to update.
- Assets: Browse exposed DAM assets, including assets from relations, with thumbnail previews.
- Settings: Manage connection settings, check for plugin updates, and view plugin information.
Can designers make manual edits in InDesign without losing synced content?
Yes. Designers can manually edit the InDesign document without breaking the connection to Pimcore. If linked text is edited, the plugin will still detect future changes from Pimcore and display them in the Updates tab. However, applying an update replaces manual changes made to the linked content. Any custom text that should remain alongside Pimcore data must be added to the text frame before it is populated for the first time. Text formatting applied in Pimcore is preserved when the content is inserted or updated in InDesign.
Does the plugin support multiple Pimcore environments?
Yes. Designers can switch between environments by changing connection settings.
How is the licensing structured — per user, per company, or per year?
Licensing is offered as an annual commercial license per organization.
How do updates and new features get delivered?
Each time the plugin is opened, it checks the latest available version and notifies the user if a newer version is available than the one currently installed. Updating to the new version is done manually by downloading the new version of the InDesign plugin or by updating the Pimcore bundle via Composer.
What kind of support or onboarding is included with the license?
Licenses include documentation access, standard support via our Customer Service portal, and assistance with installation and configuration.
