Building Android mobile application with the National and University in Zagreb (NSK) was a quite challenge for us. This was our first project with some Library in Croatia! National and University Library in Zagreb had specific needs and motivate us to be open and not afraid to tackle the unknown!
The mobile app market and Android development are expanding really fast and organizations such as National and University Library in Zagreb needs to be more competitive. To ensure the visibility and brand of National and University Library in Zagreb, we needed to be very particular about the approach of building a mobile app.
Before building a mobile application like this, we needed to answer these 4 important questions:
Why do we need a mobile application like this? What can this mobile application offer?
This unique cultural and tourism mobile application brings together old maps, postcards, photographs and expert knowledge of the history and cultural heritage of the Croatian capital. It promotes one of the most popular cities in Croatia and brings history back to a younger audience.
What features we need to include?
- Historical and present map
- Historical walk through 10 locations
- Switch between an old photo and the current one
- Option to share postcards on every installed application on user’s phone
- Option to send a postcard via email
- Integration with Google Maps
This app will have many pictures of postcards, will it affect the size of the mobile app?
Of course! Mobile app file size is important, if a mobile application is too large, it may be difficult or expensive for users to download. To help National and University Library in Zagreb, we provided our service hosting.
What mobile platform and device should be supported?
Android mobile application requires significant time and skill to be developed but offer the best user experience. According to stats of Android users we decided to build an Android application because it covers the most of targeted users of this application.
Also, we decided to support 4.4 KitKat and bigger versions of Android mobile devices. With having a clear vision regarding the target group, we had the best starting point for building a successful application.
